Social Media: School Libraries on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

Technology now a days is part of our everyday lifestyle. Gone are the days where students and parents would wait for letters in the mail or phone calls from school to get notified school events. So many school districts are involved on all types of social media which in my opinion, is very helpful. Schools post important school news and accomplishments in order to keep their school community up to date with what is going on in their school. Social media has become essential to many and I doubt this will fade away, if anything, schools and educators will keep going digital.

Facebook

I have been a Facebook user for the longest time! Though there are other new social media trends like Snapchat and Instagram, but Facebook is still holding strong. When I input the term school library a lot of library media specialist groups popped up. I was also able to find school library profiles that keep the school community updated about all school events as well recommendations for summer readings for students who are at home.Although my school district has a Facebook page to keep the school community informed of current news and events, it does not focus on specific school or give out reading recommendations, especially now that it is summer. that is something I plan to change when I become a librarian. Facebook is a great way to keep students and their parents informed and updated.

Twitter

Though it is a very famous social media platform, I can honestly say I am fairly new to twitter. Though I have used it before, for educational purposes, it still seems a bit complicated for me. Though I am more than willing to learn. I see a lot of celebrities, educators, authors, artists, etc. use this to communicate by updating their statuses and locations and I see it is a hit. Millions of people use Twitter to the best of their advantage. That’s what I plan to do. When I was checking the page of the suggested people we follow, I was able to see how many awesome resources they offer. From names of awesome authors and their books, to resourceful websites, activities, and ideas for the classroom.

After looking at Jim Lerman’s twiiter page, I just couldn’t help but notice this tweet. We recently did a report on scholar practitioners and this reminded me so much of it. Learning through the world and learning away from it. So inspiring.

My Twitter Yay!

This post stood out to me amongst all the rest. We recently did a report on "scholar practitioners" and this image reminded me so much of it. Learning through the world and learning aside from it.
It also reminded me of how diverse our students' minds are. Both sides of this image represent the uniqueness of each student and their learning abilities. Their is no wrong way to learn or view the world. May your interpretation and be as unique as you are.

Instagram

I have to say, I really enjoy Instagram. Why? It kind of reminds me of pinterest. It gives you the ability not just to search but, it also gives you suggested instagram accounts that are relevant to your previous searches. Using Instagram for the class and from the classroom would be really incredibly great. Not just for teachers to share but to get ideas as well. I work with Elementary students, but I do have friends that work with high schoolers. Some students tend to forget about homework and classroom projects and might be too shy to speak up. I believe this social media platform would be a great means of communication for students. Most students have Instagram and posting daily homework details or reminders of upcoming projects.

Feed Readers and Blogs

Okay….so were you all wondering what a feed reader is? I know I was, at first. Once I did a little research and played around with it, I realized it is not hard at all.  Basically, a feed reader is a program that gathers content from a variety of newsfeeds and puts them all available in one place. Awesome…right!! I believe this is great just because all that minimizing and maximizing of windows is such a waste of time for all of us. So yeah…

This blog is not only great for teachers and students, but for professionals who are thinking about becoming librarians. It offers a great variety of good book titles that have been reviewed by the blogger for kids of all ages. Awesome blog!

This blog focuses on informing the library science community of news and events that are currently happening.

This blog is run by a successful librarian who loves reading, technology, and sharing new ideas for educational technology. She reviews conferences attended as well as books she has read and recommends.

This blog focuses on helping elementary librarians with recommended book titles, library lesson plans, ideas for reading activities, and so much more! It also recognizes librarians and their professional accomplishments. Totally recommend!

This blog is beyond great! It not only provide wonderful reading lists but, great money saving ideas to make the best of their library.

My Final Reflection

This course has certainly been an interesting one! Opening each module was a little nerve wrecking as I didn’t know what was coming next. ...
